Academic Curriculum

The school provides a learning environment where the individual can be catered for in small class groups (average 16 pupils, maximum 20), and self reliance can be developed.

Nursery
Pupils follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and are assessed at the end of this stage when aged 5.  Subjects assessed are Language & Literacy, Numeracy, Knowledge & Understanding of the World, Physical Development (outside play & dance) and Creative Development.  Juvenile Ballet, Tap and Disco classes, together with Singing, Drama and Production (for 2 school performances) provide our distinctive element in the Creative & Physical Development areas.

Key Stage One & Two: Years 1,2,3,4,5,6 (5-11 years of age) Concentration on Reading and Writing skills and Mathematics, other subjects include History, Geography, Science, Drama, PSHE, Citizenship, Art, I.T. & French from year 4. S.A.T.S. tests are taken in English, Maths & Science at age 11.  Ballet, Modern, Tap & Musical Theatre classes and dance exams taken (I.D.T.A.), Singing, Drama & Production (for 2 school performances) are also elements of the curriculum.

Key Stage 3: Years 7, 8, & 9 (11-14 years of age)
National Curriculum in 9 subjects: English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, Citizenship, PSHE, and French. ICT (OCR CLAIT Examinations Level 1 entered) is also on the curriculum.   S.A.T.S. tests in English, Maths and Science, are indicators as to which level pupils will be entered at GCSE.  GCSE Expressive Arts & Dance preparation, Ballet, Modern, Tap & Musical Theatre classes & exams taken (I.D.T.A.), Singing, Drama, Audition Technique and Production for school variety are also elements of the curriculum.

Key Stage 4: Years 10 & 11 (14-16 years of age) G.C.S.E. in the following subjects: Drama and Expressive Arts taken in year 10; the following in year 11: English, English Literature, Mathematics, Statistics,  History, Biology, French, Art, and Dance.  Citizenship & PSHE are also studied.  We are registered as an examination centre with A.Q.A., EDEXCEL & O.C.R. examining boards.

After leaving: pupils can either enter the profession direct, or follow further vocational training / A’ Levels at College or combine the two.  Many ex pupils are currently at university or specialist colleges.
